What is the AMC 8?

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.

The AMC 8 is also available in French, Spanish, large print, and braille for print administration only.

FAQs for the AMC 8

1. Q. What's covered on the AMC 8?

   A. The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. 2. Q. Who is eligible to participate in the competition?

   A. Students with a passion for problem-solving who are in grade 8 or below and under 14.5 years of age on the day of the competition are eligible to participate in the AMC 8.

3. Q. Who can proctor the competition?

   A. Only competition manager proctoring is allowed. Parent or guardian proctoring is not allowed. Students will be proctored by their competition manager, either in-person or remotely, at the discretion of the competition manager. Remote proctoring requires the competition manager to monitor the student through a video conferencing software. If there is any suspicion of cheating or unapproved resources, Competition Managers will be contacted. View Disqualification and Cheating policies here. 4. Q. Can the AMC 8 competition be proctored to different math classes during various time slots on the official administration dates or do all the students have to take the competition at the same time?

   A. The competitions must be administered during their valid competition window by competition managers. The valid competition window for this cycle is 8:00 AM to 11:59 PM Eastern Standard time (GMT +5) on the official USA competition dates. See competition dates. Competition managers may choose to administer the competition at separate times to different sections of students; however, for competition integrity and security, the MAA AMC strongly encourages competition managers to administer the competition to all participating students at the same time.

5. Q. When do we get official scores and reports for the AMC 8?

   A.The MAA AMC office will begin emailing official scores and reports in early to late-February following the AMC 8 in January. The email reports go out roughly in the order that we process the answer forms submitted from schools. Processing and reporting from start to finish take about 3 to 4 weeks.

6. Q. How do I make a request for a rescore of my answer forms?

   A.Use the AMC 8 Rescore Request Form. There is a $35.00 charge for each student answer form that is rescored. The official answers will be the ones blackened on the answer form. All student answer forms returned for grading will be recycled 80 days after the AMC 8 competition date.

7. Q. I've already registered for the AMC 8 but I would like to order more bundles than I put in my original order, can I?

   A.Yes, you can use the Additional Bundles Order Form to order more. Orders for additional bundles will be accepted until December 10, 2021, for participating institutions located within the continental United States. The deadline for orders for additional bundles for institutions located in Canada, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands is December 3, 2021.

한국 학생들의 공부, 그 비효율성에 대하여

 “선생님, (저는, 우리 아이가) 열심히 공부를 하는데도 왜 성적이 오르지 않나요?” 이는 대한민국의 학생이나 학부모라면 한 번쯤 안고 있는 고민이자 상담의 주된 내용이다. 

과거 한국 학생들의 공부 시간이 세계에서 가장 오랜 시간이라는 것은 널리 알려진 사실이다. 우리나라 청소년들이 일주일에 공부하는 시간은 49.43시간으로 OECD 평균(33.92시간)에 비해 15시간이나 많은 것으로 나타났다. 

2009년 보건복지가족부가 한국청소년정책연구원에 의뢰해 작성한 '아동·청소년의 생활패턴에 관한 국제비교연구'에 따르면 국내 15-24세 학생의 평일 학습시간은 7시간 50분으로 5시간 전후인 다른 OECD 국가에 비해 2시간 이상 길었다. 주요 나라를 보면 핀란드 청소년의 공부시간이 6시간6분, 스웨덴 5시간55분, 일본 5시간21분, 미국 5시간4분, 독일 5시간2분 이었다. 

하지만 한국 학생들의 공부는 지극히 비효율적임이 드러났다. 2009년 고등학교 1학년 학생의 국제 비교평가를 보면 OECD 34개국 중에서 우리나라 학생들이 읽기 1위, 수학 1위, 과학 3위였다. 핀란드 학생들은 읽기 2위, 수학 2위, 과학 1위였다. 언뜻 보면 두 나라의 학력은 거의 비슷하다. 그런데 문제는 핀란드 학생들은 1주일에 30시간 공부해서 이 성적이 나오고 한국 학생들은 1주일에 무려 50시간 공부해서 이 성적이 나온다는 것이다. 

왜 이런 현상이 발생하는 것일까? 그것은 한국 학생들은 보충수업이나 사교육 시간이 많고 숙제 등 자기주도적인 학습시간은 짧아 학업성취도는 별다른 차이가 없다는 것이다. 즉, 공부하는 시간은 단연 길지만 그냥 남이 하라는 대로만 하는 경우가 대부분이기 때문이다. 이는 한두 명의 경우가 아닌 너무도 많은 학생들의 문제다.

문제의 원인은 중학교로 거슬러 올라간다. 중학교 시기는 미래에 대한 어느 정도 예측 능력이 생기면서 공부의 기술, 노하우, 요령을 익힐 수 있는 결정적 시기다. 그런데 이것을 방해하는 가장 결정적인 요소가 바로 학원 공부다. 종합반에 등록하는 순간 아이는 국⋅영⋅수⋅사⋅과 어떤 과목에 대해서도 계획을 세울 필요가 없다. 다시 말해 공부에 대한 어떤 계획도 세워서는 안 된다. 

또 종합반이 아니더라도 이 과목은 저 학원, 저 과목은 이 학원, 그리고 과외 등으로 스스로 종합반을 만드는 격이다. 그래서 정작 중요한 공부의 기술(skill)은 배우지 못하고 그저 시간만 투자하고 열심히 한다고 착각하는 것이다. 처음에 반짝 단기간의 성과를 잊지 못하고 학원 의존이 장기간 지속됨으로써 효과는 제자리걸음에 지나지 않는 경우가 대부분이다.  

고등학교에 와서도 이런 공부는 계속된다. 학원을 다니지 않는 학생을 찾아보기가 어렵다. 교육부의 발표에 의하면 2020년 코로나-19 사태에도 불구하고 사교육을 받은 학생이 66.5%에 이르렀다. 전년 대비 7%가 감소한 것이라 한다. 그러니 학교에서 마련해 주는 자기주도적 학습용 면학실은 소수의 소신파만 자리를 지킬 뿐이다. 이들은 비록 소수이기는 하지만 진득이 엉덩이를 붙이고 장시간 자기와의 싸움에 몰두하는 습관이 배어 결국 상위권에 위치하고 있다. 

그런데 이렇게 습관의 형성을 방해하는 학원 공부가 대다수의 학생들에게 각종 선행학습이나 보충학습이란 이유로 지나치게 성행하고 있다. 나중엔 같은 내용을 학원과 학교에서 반복적으로 수차례 실행하니 학생들은 공부의 흥미조차 상실하고 교실 수업 시간에는 배울 것이 없다고 잠을 자는 지극히 비효율적인 공부에 많은 시간을 낭비하고 있다. 

이제는 학원주도학습을 버리고 자기주도학습으로 습관화해야 한다. 학원 1시간 공부보다 자기주도학습 1시간 공부가 수능이나 대학 진학 이후에도 더 성적이 좋다는 결과는 많다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사교육비가 매년 크게 증가하는 요즘이다. 소위 부모의 등골 브레이커가 많다는 말이다. 문제는 부모들이 스스로 자학하듯이 그리고 울며 겨자 먹듯이 자녀의 학원 수강을 부추기고 있다는 것이다. 

이런 가운데 오늘도 필자의 눈에는 “남들이 다 한다고 저는 그러고 싶지 않습니다”면서 묵묵히 학교의 면학실을 지키며 공부에 열중하는 학생이 눈에 띈다. 그들은 스스로 체득한 학습법으로 작은 성취를 느끼며 즐겁게 공부하고 있다. 이런 모습을 보면 대다수의 학생들이 지나치게 비효율적인 학습에 습관화되어 있음이 지극히 안타까울 뿐이다.
