CTY programs Testing Overview

 

CTY offers a number of testing options for Talent Search participants. These tests assess student ability and provide an opportunity to qualify for CTY programs.

Grades 2-8: SCAT

Our primary test for students in grades two through six is the School and College Ability Test (SCAT), which is available to students in grades seven and eight as well. The SCAT measures verbal and mathematical reasoning ability and consists of one verbal section and one quantitative section, administered on a computer at hundreds of Prometric test center locations around the country. Testing is scheduled by individual appointment. The verbal section measures a student’s understanding of the meaning of words. The quantitative section measures a student’s understanding of fundamental number operations.

Grades 7-8: SAT and ACT

Our primary tests for students in grades seven and eight are the SAT and ACT. The SAT and ACT are standardized, nationally recognized tests administered throughout the US and abroad under controlled conditions. Both objectively measure the reading and mathematical abilities that a student has developed within and outside of school. The SAT is administered by the College Board. The ACT is administered by the company of the same name, ACT. Both are paper-based tests generally taken by college-bound high school juniors and seniors and are scheduled at local schools on specific national administration days.

Grades 5-8: STB

CTY’s Spatial Test Battery (STB), given via computer by individual appointment at hundreds of locations around the United States, can help determine a child’s spatial ability, which is the ability to understand and remember the spatial relationships among objects, manipulate images in space, and visualize how separate parts of complex physical systems interrelate. STB scores can provide an additional layer of information about a student's academic capabilities.
