Squaring the Circle

People are asking me about the strange value of pi on Ralph Rene's website. A friend of mine put together this animation to show its derivation, and set it to nice music.

Background: Squaring the Circle refers to an ancient problem requiring that a circle be transformed into a square of equal area in a finite numbers of steps using only a compass and straightedge ruler, i.e. by geometric means. It is widely considered impossible. In 1988 a mathematician named Dan W. Gaddy had spent several years working on the problem and declared to have solved it. He released a paper entitled "On the Exact Measurement and Quadrature of the Circle". It involved a vectorial analysis of the "nature of circular motion" and concluded that pi has different value than what is currently believed.

That's all I can tell you. I don't have the original paper, only an extract and hence am not aware of the logic behind it. I'm putting this here in the hope that someone has access to the original paper and can contribute useful information. Enjoy.
