“For young people, the ability to read is the door opener to the 21st century.

(젊은 학생들에겐 읽기실력이 21세기로 가는 열린 문입니다.)” OPRAH WINFRY

Global Literacy Call to Action(글로벌 독서운동)은 the Reading Bill of Rights: A Child‘s Right to Read(학생들이 리딩을 잘할 권리)를 8개로 열거합니다.

1. 읽고, 쓰고, 이해할 권리는. 어린이들이 태어날 때부터(birthright) 가졌다.

(The ability to read, write and understand is the birthright of every child.)

2. Digital information 시대에 정보를 분석하고, 해석하고, 이해하고, 사실과 의견을 구별하고, 논리적 사고력(logical thinking)을 가지기위해서 어느 때보다 읽기가 중요해졌다.

3. Literacy 없이는 인생의 의미(meaning)와 soul(영혼)을 깊게 이해할 수 없다.

4. ”You are what you read.“ (독서가 곧 당신이다.)

5. 모든 학생들은 책, 교육적인 잡지, 신문, 등을 읽고 자신을 알고 주위의 세계를 알기 위해서 독서를 해야 된다.

6. 광범위한 독서와 유창한 읽기실력은 대학이나 전문적 직장생활의 성공을 좌우한다. Literacy confidence(책 읽고 글 쓰는 자신감)은 자신이 아는 바를 읽고, 쓰고, 말할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.

7. 학생들은 위대한 스토리를 이해할 수 있어야한다.

8. 21세기는 읽기실력이 삶의 목적과 의미를 이해하는 척도이다.

그냥 책읽기만 하는 게 아니라 책을 ?읽고 나서 다음과 같은 액티비티를 해보라고 하세요.

1. Make a list of 5 words that are important to the understanding of the story.

(이 스토리를 이해하는데 중요한 단어 5개를 써봐라)

2. List the six most important events that happened in the story and write a 20-word summary of these events.

(이 스토리 중 일어난 6개의 이벤트를 적고 20개 단어로 요약해봐라.)

3. Write an interview that you would have with the main character of the story.

(주인공과 인터뷰를 한다면 인터뷰질문을 써봐.)

4. What lessons in life does the story teach?

(이 스토리가 우리들 인생에 가르쳐주는 교훈은?)

5. Write a new ending to the story other than the one that is already written.

(새로운 결말을 써봐)

6. Write a poem about your favorite part of the story.

(네가 좋아하는 얘기 부분을 골라 시로 써봐.)?

7. Compose a song, which summarizes the story.

(이 스토리를 요약하는 노래를 작곡해봐.)

위와 같이 여러 다른 창조적인 사고력을 요구하는 과제가 늘 book report 만 쓰는 것보다 더 재미있을 수도 있습니다.
