AMC 8 Information Overview

What is the AMC 8?

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom learned skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

FAQs for the AMC 8

  1. Q. What's covered on the AMC 8?
    A. The material included on the AMC 8 is middle school mathematics curriculum. None of the problems require the use of algebra or a calculator. Possible topics include but are not limited to: Probability, Estimation, Percents, Elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, Spatial Visualization, Everyday Applications, and Reading/Interpreting Graphs.
  2. Q. Who can proctor the contest?
    A. The proctoring of any AMC 8 should be by a teacher (preferably a mathematics teacher) or administrator at the school; a college or university teacher of mathematics, or a responsible adult such as a math club coach or librarian. The proctoring of the exam must take place in a public building, (e.g. school, library, college or university, church). The proctor should not be related to any of the participants.
  3. Q. When do we get official scores and reports for the AMC 8?
    A.The MAA AMC office will begin emailing official scores and reports in early to mid-December following the AMC 8 in late November. The email reports go out roughly in the order that we process the answer forms submitted from schools. Processing and reporting from start to finish takes about 3 to 4 weeks.
  4. Q. How do I make a request for a rescore of my answer forms?
    A.Use the “AMC 8 Rescoring Request Form". There is a $35.00 charge for each student answer form that is rescored. The official answers will be the ones blackened on the answer form. All student answer forms returned for grading will be recycled 80 days after the AMC 8 competition date.
  5. Q. I've already registered for the AMC 8 but I would like to order more bundles than I put in my original order, can I?
    A.Use the “Additional Bundles Form” or go to amc-reg.maa.org. Orders of additional bundles will be accepted until November 1, 2016.
