Contests and Awards



How can you find a contest that suits you?  It's easier than you think.  Use your favorite Internet search engine, and search on a couple words.  If you live in Alabama, and like taking pictures, you might search on  "contest 2011 photography Alabama."  Today, that search results in the Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest.  Perfect!  Or perhaps you'd prefer a national essay contest, but you're not sure what topic you'd like to write about.  I might search on "national essay contest."  In the first page of results, I've found National Peace Essay Contest, Holocaust Remembrance Project, and Idea of America among others.  Do you have some unique characteristic, talent or passion area?  Search for that uniqueness.

Lincoln & the Gettysburg Address "A New Birth of Freedom"

An essay contest for middle & high school students, deadline March 1, 2005. To commemorate the opening of the Lincoln Museum in Springfield, Illinois, on April 19, 2005, C-SPAN and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum are asking students to read and consider the sentiments expressed in the Gettysburg Address. In the speech, Lincoln asked his audience to resolve that the country "...shall have a new birth of freedom...." Students are invited to write and submit an essay not to exceed 272 words (the same number of words in the Gettysburg Address) with their own thoughts about "a new birth of freedom" in the 21st century.
