The Mayonnaise Jar and Coffee

    When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar... and the coffee... A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, " I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things-your God, family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions-things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else-the small stuff."
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.
The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,

there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

철학 교수는 교실에 서서 앞에 몇 가지 물품들을 올려놓았다.

수업이 시작되자 안이 텅빈 커다란 마요네즈 병을 말없이 집어 들어 그 안을 골프공 으로 가득 채웠다.

그리곤 학생들에게 병이 가득찼는지 물었다.

그들은 그렇다고 했으므로 교수는조약돌 한 박스를 들어 병에 쏟아 붓고는

병을 가볍게 흔들었다.

물론 조약돌은골프공 사이사이로 굴러 떨어졌다.
학생들은 웃음을 터뜨렸다.

다시 한번 교수는 학생들에게 병이 다 찼느냐고 물었다.
그들은 그렇다고 대답했다.
교수는 모래 한 박스를 들어 병에 쏟아 부었다. 물론, 모래는 나머지 빈 공간을 채웠다.

철학교수는 다시 한번 마요네즈 병이 가득 찾는지 물어보았다.
학생들 모두 한목소리로 "예." 라고 대답했다.

그러자 교수는 교탁 밑에서 커피2잔을 꺼내어 골프공,조약돌,모래로 가득찬 병에다시 부어 보았다.
모래사이의 빈공간으로 커피가 스며 들어갔다.
학생들은 웃지않을수가 없었다.

“자,” 교수가 말했다. “이것이 우리의 인생이라는 점을 명심했으면 합니다.

골프공은 인생의 중요한 부분이죠.....종교,가족, 배우자, 건강, 아이들....
나머지 다른 모든 것들을 잃어버렸다 하더라도이들이 여전히 남아 있다면,여러분 인생은 아직 가득차 있는 거예요.

자갈은 인생에서 문제가 되는 또 다른 부분들 이지만, 좀더 스케일이 작죠.....여러분의 직업이라든지, 집, 차와 같은 것들을 의미합니다. 모래는 그 밖의, 작은 것들이죠.“

“맨 처음, 병에 모래나 자갈을 넣는다면, 골프공이 들어갈 자리가 없어집니다.

인생에 있어서도 같습니다. 여러분의 에너지와 시간을 하찮은 것, 물질적인 것에 낭비한다면, 여러분은 진실로 중요한 것들을 소유할 틈이 없어질 겁니다.

인생에서 정말 중요한 것들에 주의를 기울이세요.

자녀들과 함께 어울리세요. 배우자와 춤추러 나가기도 하고요. 직장 나가고 집을 청소하고 저녁 파티를 열고 쓰레기 치울 시간은 언제나 있을 겁니다.”

먼저 골프공들을 챙기십시오. 정말로 중요한 것들을 말입니다. 우선권을 두세요. 다른 것들은 단지 자갈과 모래일 뿐이니까요.”

한학생이 손을들고 질문을 했다.
두잔의 커피는 뭘 의미 하느냐고?
교수는 웃으면서 훌륭한 질문 이라고 했다.

아무리 우리의 인생이 가득차 보일지라도 친구와 함께 마실
"커피 한잔의 여유는 있어야" 한다고.
